An Attitude of Gratitude

November 8th, 2006

The fall months have been busy and extremely rewarding.

September 2006 included a GS/DS Leadership Development Meeting in Indianapolis with five fellow DS’s and General Superintendent Thomas E. Armiger; our BYF Retreat on the Maysville Campground; dedication of the new Richmond Grace Church Property with 125 in attendance; installation of Rev. Johnny Haynes at our Carrollton Church; and our Annual Minister’s Retreat held at Lake Cumberland.

October 2006 afforded me the opportunity of preaching at my very first pastorate at the Miamisburg (OH) Wesleyan Church for their homecoming activities. This was my first visit with them in nearly 25 years. On October 5-6, it was my delight to attend my first Indiana Wesleyan University board meeting and participate in the inauguration ceremony for my high school and college friend, Dr. Henry L. Smith. It was also a joy to participate in a mortgage burning service for our Garvin Ridge church, who paid off their new church building in 4 years. I also was privileged to bring greetings to our Glasgow Church for their 50th Anniversary Homecoming Service. Former pastors Paul Mills and J.W. Neal also attended. On October 22 I attended the morning services of Focus Ministries in Georgetown, where Dr. Barclay Brown is the pastor. Dr. Brown is in process of transferring to our district from the United Methodist Church. We concluded October with a work day at the Maysville Campground during which we winterized most of the buildings.

November 1-5, 2006 I was privileged to conduct revival services at the Westport (IN) Wesleyan Church. I pastored these dear people from 1985 - 1990. We had wonderful services with 84 in attendance for the Sunday morning worship service. November will include a DBA meeting and visits with our Milton and Hitchins churches. The week of November 20 has been designated for home improvement projects and the celebration of Thanksgiving.

Pastor Chip Monck has joined me in visiting the Pikeville and Lexington First churches for the purpose of beginning the Mentorship for Church Renewal program. Future plans call for us to visit the Shepherdsville, Eastview, Paris and Owensboro Calvary churches. Pastor John Fowler will also be involved.

I anticipate posting updates on a more regular basis relative to my activities and happenings in the Kentucky District. Also, I may occasionally share personal thoughts, quotes from others and etc.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day, may all of us have an attitude of gratitude for the many blessings we share together as Americans and specifically as believers in Christ. - Glenn D. Black

Recent Reflections

August 2nd, 2005

Our Kentucky District Wesleyan Kid’s Camp was held July 11-15 at our Maysville Campground. Fifty-four (54) children attended and nearly seventy (70) youth and adults were present. Lori Sheehan of Fountain City (IN) Wesleyan Church was the special children’s worker. Josh and Becca Bowlin, newly appointed missionaries to New Zealand, challenged the children concerning missions. Rev. Steve Sandefur, District Wesleyan Kid’s Director, and the WK Committee provided very capable leadership. Several children received Christ as their savior and many others renewed their commitment to Christ. Mark your calendar…next year’s Kid’s Camp is July 10-14, 2006.

The 2005 Kentucky District Wesleyan Camp was held July 25-31 on the Maysville Campground. A total of 165 registered with dozens more attending. The God anointed preaching of Rev. Jerry Brecheisen and Dr. O.W. Willis was a blessing to everyone. The singing of Rev. Ben and Sue Colburn was an enjoyable blessing as well. The Sunday afternoon (7/31) District Celebration Service was attended by 174. The Colburns, Sylvia Smith and Ken Gates offered special singing and Rev. Willis brought a challenging message based on Acts 1:8. John and Shanda Croft and two of their children (Wesleyan Missionaries to the Czech Republic) were our special guests on Friday, July 29. Mark your calendar…next year’s Family Camp is July 24-30, 2006.

The next District Event is the Best Year’s Fellowship Retreat on September 7-10 at the Maysville Campground. For more information, check the Maysville Campground link and scroll down to BYF information. The District Minister’s and Mates Retreat will be September 26-29 at Lake Cumberland State Park near Jamestown, KY.

The Kentucky District Wesleyan Kid’s Committee is planning a “Brainstorming Tour” in September and early October. This tour is designed to network Children’s Workers from across the state, provide a think tank for idea sharing and reflection, and help expand and reenergize each of our visions for children’s ministries. Mark your calendar and plan to attend one of the Brainstorming Tour stops - Saturday, September 17 - Elizabethtown Trinity; Saturday, September 24 - Ashland Westwood; and Saturday, October 8 - Lexington Stonewall. Each stop will run from 10:00 until 4:00 PM and will include lunch, as well as helpful resources for ministry. Best of all…IT IS FREE!

Summer Salutations

Welcome to the Kentucky District Wesleyan website! Thank you for checking in on our District Office blog page. The primary purpose of our blog page is to provide current local church and district news, information, inspirational thoughts and occasional personal observations relative to happenings in the secular and religious worlds.

On June 17, 2005 the 37th annual Kentucky District Conference of The Wesleyan Church was held at our Lexington Stonewall Wesleyan Church. Pastor Chip Monck and his great staff were gracious hosts. General Superintendent Thomas E. Armiger provided leadership for the conference. Elsewhere on our website you will find a listing of current district leaders who were elected by the conference delegates. One of the highlights of the conference was the unanimous approval of a resolution to commit all of our Kentucky District (42) local churches and pastors to a five year (2005-2010) District Strategy for Spiritual, Numerical and Stewardship Growth. In response, the District Board of Administration has approved the theme “Charting the Course” for the 2005-2006 conference year. New district vision and mission statements will be formulated. Local church and district statistics will be reviewed. Five year goals for local churches and the district will be adopted. General Superintendent Thomas E. Armiger has accepted our invitation to serve as a facilitator at a special Kentucky District Leadership Event for Friday and Saturday, October 28 & 29, 2005. DBA members, other district leaders and interested pastors will be attending. The location and a detailed schedule will be announced soon.

Our Kentucky District Wesleyan Youth Camp was held June 20-24, 2005 at our Maysville Campground. Twenty-eight (28) youth attended and nearly 12 other young people from Bethany Bible College, Kentucky Mountain Bible College and a worship group from Michigan were also present. Rev. Josh LeRoy was the special speaker. Rev. David Little, Savanah Pelfrey and others provided very capable leadership. Rev. Little was reelected for a 2 year term during the youth convention on June 24.

On Sunday, June 26 it was my joy to be with Pastor Dale Collinsworth and the Olive Hill congregation. They had 96 for Sunday School. It was my privilege to preach and along with Sharon join this growing church for a noon carry-in meal in their beautiful fellowship hall. During the afternoon we visited with Soldier pastor Kenny and Linda Hamilton. In the evening we preached at our new Richmond Grace Church. It was a joy to be with Pastor Tommy & Dorothy Masters and the wonderful people at Richmond. Prior to the service I met with Rev. Masters at a possible new church site on the edge of Richmond.

Our Kentucky District Wesleyan Kid’s Camp is July 11-15 and our family camp is July 25-31.
